USA | ARCHITECTURE GUIDE

For a country as small as The Netherlands, its contribution to the advancement of architectural discourse cannot be understated. The Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century introduced a democratic style of renaissance and baroque architecture that has become synonymous with old Holland. Almost 300 years later, architects like Henrik P. Berlage and Gerrit Rietveld guided architects away from decoration and towards a dutch modernism that is defined by its rational floor plans and use of glass and steel. Today, the country is still booming with explorative and exciting design led by ‘starchitects’ like Rem Koolhaas, Ben van Berkel, Wiel Arets, and Winy Maas.

From the canal houses of Amsterdam to the experimental ‘Kubuswoningen’ in Rotterdam, architecture is as Dutch as windmills or tulips.
