Construction Progress: Anakkale Antenna Tower
Architect: IND [Inter.National.Design], Powerhouse Company
Location: Çanakkale, Turkey
Type: Lookout, Infrastructure
Year: Ongoing

On a forested hilltop in the old Turkish city of Anakkale, the unique 100-meter-high design embraces the lovely landscape. By looping around the site, the weathering steel structure transforms into a tower in one fluid move, producing an immersive experience of the forest close-up while offering breathtaking panoramic views in all directions.
The project’s unusual shape, which hangs over the mountain geographical outlines, gives the city a subtle aesthetic character. Simultaneously, the design creates an interior garden, which provides a more personal experience of nature. You can watch the sneak peek film shot by Marcel IJzerman earlier in the construction process here:
The Anakkale Antenna Tower presented Powerhouse Company us with a lot of intriguing paradoxes: how do we improve our perception of nature while technology is present? How might the extraordinary heights of the antenna tower be used to provide a unique visitor experience while also protecting visitors from the dangers of the transmitters’ radiations? Its design aspires for technical functionality that maximises the reading of the landscape’s intrinsic diversity through gestures.
Along with the antenna tower, the broadcast tower will serve as a public viewing platform, equipped with exhibition rooms, a restaurant, leisure amenities, and observation decks. All of these distinct tasks and requirements are combined into a single spatial gesture.
The design serves as the apex of a woodland route that weaves its way up the hill on which it is situated. The forest route is detachable from the earth, allowing it to be freed from the forest and making room for a future wild garden. An undulating platform with varying heights serves as an elevated walkway. It loops around the site, providing amazing panoramic views of the city and forest before returning to the top of the hill, where it is directed up into the sky. In addition to a distinctive antenna tower, the forested hilltop location will be transformed into a public destination once completed.
