Now that King’s Landing lays in ruin and ashes, I thought it would be interesting to look back at some of the incredible photos from an episode that will long be remembered for its ruthless destruction, massive character twists, and stunning cinematography. As an architect watching this episode, I couldn’t help but be taken back by the views of the capital; it’s soaring Red Keep, the sun-soaked tiles of the rooftops, and the massive fortifications which all bore witness to the power of the mad Targaryen queen.

It was a reminder of the power and fragility of architecture; its ability to shelter and protect the most vulnerable while asserting the authority of others over the many. Despite its often eternal beauty, all buildings are victims to time and place (and sometimes dragons). Let’s take a look at 10 Iconic Architecture Shots from Game of Thrones s8e5 “The Bells”.

It all starts innocently enough. The city’s fortified walls are still standing and we’re getting ready for yet another battle on the ground between the forces of good and evil.

We then see the foreboding shadow of the dragon as it soars over the capital’s rooftops.

It’s then we realize that this episode may be more than a sword exchange as a large spew of dragon fire takes out the gate, the army, and any sense that this is going to be a fair fight.

We now pan out to see the beauty and devastation of King’s Landing in one brief moment. Everything’s fine though because the bottom half of the city still looks like it’s in pretty decent shape.

That is until we realize that saving the city was never the intended outcome. Women, children, domed cathedrals are all fair game.

Daenerys lays waste to the entire King’s Landing with no quarter spared.

I guess Dany was saving the best for last as the Red Keep didn’t get torched until much later.

But not before witnessing one of the most anticipated brother-on-brother showdowns of television history (with a backdrop that completely lives up to the moment).

In the end, we are left with the sights and sounds of tragedy.

And the delicate interplay of light, shadow, and ash that lifts the survivors.
