The following description is courtesy of the architects. Lasting Joy is a farm brewery and tasting room located on a large rural property in upstate New York. The goal of the project was to create a welcoming and hospitable environment which would cater to all types of visitors, beyond just serious beer drinkers.
The project is sited on 31 acres of former farmland on a small country road in Columbia County, NY. The property had an existing agricultural storage barn, which was re-purposed to house the brewing facilities and staff areas. A new dedicated space for the tasting room was constructed to welcome and entertain visitors.
Taking advantage of the beautiful surroundings, the tasting room is designed as a pavilion-like structure that immerses visitors in the landscape. The space is defined by its glu-lam frame and cross-laminated timber roof structure, with a fully glazed enclosure and exterior weathering-steel cladding. Though the enclosure is entirely glass, the interior has a warm, natural character due to the tight spacing of the trusses and the exposed CLT roof, which contrast with the brawnier steel exterior. The uplifting roof form fills the space with natural light, which is shielded by an exterior passive solar louvered sun-screen.
Floating in the center of the space, the hexagonal bar allows the exterior glass walls to remain unobstructed, and provides a more social way for guests to interact and taste the beers on tap. The bar is detailed in marble, leather, and wood, in soft and natural tones that are rooted in the palette of the local landscape. All services, including the beer lines for the draft system, are run underground in specifically
designed conduits back to the brewing facility.
A partially covered outdoor courtyard, which is oriented towards a small pond beyond, acts as transitional space between indoors and outdoors. The parking area is sited away from the building, hidden over a hill closer to the road. When approached from a winding path up and over the hill, the building gradually reveals itself, adding intrigue to arrival. From inside the tasting room, visitors experience only views of the open landscape.
