The most visual architecture guide to Sydney ever published – more than 60 stunning buildings, designed by some of the world’s greatest architects, presented on a beautifully illustrated map to accompany you on your next trip to “The Emerald City”.

Australia’s vibrant harbor city blends historic charm with modern innovation. Notable historic buildings include the Strand Arcade, a Victorian-era shopping arcade with ornate ironwork and stained glass; the Sydney Town Hall, a grand sandstone structure from the 1880’s known for its elaborate clock tower and French Second Empire style; and the Queen Victoria Building, a Romanesque Revival masterpiece adorned with domes and intricate interior detailing, now a bustling shopping center.

Sydney’s modern architectural history is epitomized by the iconic Sydney Opera House, designed by Jørn Utzon and completed in 1973. Its distinctive sail-like shells have made it a global symbol of architectural excellence. Another significant modernist structure is Sirius House, built in the late 1970s as a brutalist public housing complex, now a heritage-listed building admired for its bold, concrete form and social housing legacy.

Contemporary architecture in Sydney includes leading designs such as the Exchange by Kengo Kuma & Associates, with its lively, swirling wooden facade. The Sydney Modern Museum by SANAA, an expansion to the Art Gallery of New South Wales, promises a light and airy design seamlessly integrated with the landscape. Frank Gehry’s Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, a deconstructivist marvel at the University of Technology Sydney, stands out with its curvaceous brickwork.

Local gems like Phoenix Central Park, a collaboration between Australian architects Durbach Block Jaggers and John Wardle, combine art and performance spaces in an award-winning structure, while the Reservoir Gardens Canopy by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer revitalizes a historic reservoir with a striking contemporary roof design. These projects highlight Sydney’s dynamic and innovative architectural scene.

This thoroughly researched architecture guide is a must-have for architecture enthusiasts of all ages. It makes travel planning effortless and boasts an up-to-date curated list of buildings not found anywhere else; the perfect pocket-companion for your next trip abroad.

Can’t say enough good things about these city guides. I’m constantly looking for worthwhile buildings and architecture to go see whenever I travel to a new city, and having them beautifully laid out and curated in the city guide has been amazing. They’re very handy to tuck into a pocket while travelling, and the recommended routes on them save a huge amount of planning time. Will definitely be picking up more, even for cities I’ve already travelled through. Highly recommended!
