Situated in the Jiangxia District of Wuhan City, Hubei Province, the Cabin of Palette is part of the Wiki World Co-Building Plan, which seeks to create a series of nature-integrated homes. This structure continues a line of artistic cabin designs, following previous projects like the Pure Blue Cabin and the Maze Cabin.

Nestled within a forest, the cabin is designed to balance shelter with openness to its natural surroundings. The region’s climate—featuring cold winters and hot summers—inspired the development of an elevated, palette-shaped green roof that promotes airflow. Supported by lightweight wooden structures, the roof is marked with contour lines that blend with the landscape. The home is composed of three interconnected volumes—a bedroom, living room, and bathroom—arranged in a circular layout to offer diverse views of the environment. Expansive covered terraces extend from both the front and back, providing shaded spaces for summer heat and seasonal rains. Additionally, a private courtyard offers an outdoor retreat for activities like bonfires.

The Cabin of Palette’s structure is clad in black carbonized wood

The Cabin of Palette is clad in black carbonized wood, creating a striking contrast against its green roof. The wooden structural elements supporting the roof are arranged in an irregular pattern, blending aesthetics with functionality. Measuring 10cm x 10cm, the wooden support beams are distributed asymmetrically around the structure, enhancing stability while preserving an open, airy feel.

Wiki World’s architects designed the cabin with a dual character—when viewed from above, it appears abstract and expressive, while at ground level, the materiality highlights natural textures and invites tactile engagement. The carbonized wood facade, paired with open-air spaces, reinforces the cabin’s seamless integration with the surrounding forest.

Constructed using a prefabricated glued-laminated timber system, the cabin incorporates digitally fabricated components that allow for complete off-site assembly. The construction process minimizes environmental impact by preserving existing trees and vegetation, while the elevated structure prevents disruption to the natural terrain. Modular wooden elements, connected with small metal fasteners, ensure adaptability and reusability. The carbonized wood cladding is hand-treated using traditional techniques, enhancing durability while maintaining a connection to natural craftsmanship.

Wiki World Creates Small-Scale, Nature-Integrated Living Spaces

Wiki World embraces a design philosophy that prioritizes small-scale, nature-integrated living. The Cabin of Palette exemplifies this approach, emphasizing a harmonious relationship between architecture and its natural surroundings. By preserving the woodland’s original textures and utilizing prefabricated wooden structures, the project promotes sustainability and interactive design. The experience encourages direct engagement with nature, from the tactile sensation of walking barefoot on wooden surfaces to the immersive sounds of the surrounding forest.
