Introducing ÅVONTUURA’s Architecture Guide to Miami

Architecture Guide to Miami

ÅVONTUURA is excited to announce the launch of its Architecture Guide to Miami; the 26th guide in our Wandering Series.

Miami’s early development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was marked by Mediterranean Revival and Caribbean influences, but it was the Art Deco movement of the 1920s and 1930s that truly defined Miami’s global architectural identity.

Miami Art Deco is distinguished by its pastel colors, sleek lines, geometric patterns, and nautical motifs, all designed to reflect the optimism and glamour of the era. The style’s signature can be seen in the historic hotels and apartment buildings lining Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue, where features like terrazzo floors, glass blocks, chrome accents, and neon lighting create a lively, sun-drenched aesthetic. A standout example is the Colony Hotel (1935), designed by Henry Hohauser. The Colony’s streamlined facade, bold geometric “inverted T” marquee, and vibrant blue neon have made it an enduring symbol of South Beach, representing both the technological optimism and modern luxury of its time.

As Miami evolved, so did its architecture. The city became a laboratory for contemporary design, attracting world-renowned architects who introduced bold new forms and ideas. 1111 Lincoln Road by Herzog & de Meuron (2010) reimagines a parking garage as a dramatic civic space, with open-air decks, sculptural concrete slabs, and panoramic views, blending commerce, social life, and urban infrastructure in a single, expressive structure.

In Coconut Grove, The Grove at Grand Bay by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) features two twisting residential towers that maximize views and outdoor living, their dynamic forms a feat of structural engineering and a tribute to Miami’s lush, tropical environment. The Faena Forum, designed by OMA, stands at the heart of the Faena District as a flexible cultural venue; its cylindrical and cubic forms, clad in concrete and glass, nod to both Miami’s Streamline Moderne heritage and its future as a global arts destination.
